Elon Musk: “Jack of all Trades”

Few individuals can be termed as true visionaries, who take it upon themselves to bring about change in the way we live. They come in and stir the stew of society with innovation, thus clearing the scum of stagnancy that builds to the top once in a while.

One of such individuals is Elon Musk. Many believe him to be the real-life inspiration for Iron Man’s Tony Stark. Whatever you label him as one thing is for sure: Elon Musk ideas is changing the spectrum of how we use technology to make this world a better place.

Musk, born in 1971 in South Africa, had a rough childhood and never fit in well at school. But, there was a fire inside him from the start. A desire to learn about how things work. By fourth grade, he was constantly buried in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He was fascinated with computers and science fiction from a young age to a point where he related humans to computers. According to him, the brain was the hardware, and the software was the ability to learn, the personality, the habits that one develops.

Elon musk was fascinated with computers and science fiction from a young age to a point where he related humans to computers. According to Musk, the brain was the hardware, and the software was the ability to learn, the personality, the habits that one develops.

He always despised the normal education system, terming it as a ridiculously slow process. In college, he made a to-do list which contained what he would want to relate his life with; it included the Internet, sustainable energy, space exploration, artificial intelligence among others.

The magnitude of elon musk visionary forecast can be seen on this list as many of the things mentioned in it were not even in popular culture nor they had the technology to achieve them at that time. But, he was never pessimistic. He believed in his dreams.

Musk, then 17, viewed Silicon Valley as his opportunity to start what he aspired to do. After some early setbacks, which almost broke his confidence, he started a company Zip2 in 1995. Zip2 was like an online directory, and Musk wrote the code for it. Musk had come to the right place at the right time as the 90s-internet boom was at its peak. He eventually sold Zip2 for $307 million to Compaq and made $22 million of that deal. His age, just 27 at that time.

His next venture would be monumental in terms of implementation and feasibility considering those times. He wanted to build an online bank and called it as X.com. This X.com eventually partnered with a similar company Confinity, formed by Peter Thiel, to merge into what we know as PayPal today.

He made an astronomical amount of money with PayPal and around 2002 he planned for his dream project of space exploration. He started one of the most unthinkable and ill-advised ventures of all time: a rocket company called SpaceX. With this going on, in 2004, he also started an electric car company called Tesla, whose stated purpose was to revolutionise the worldwide car industry. After two years, in 2006, he founded another company, called SolarCity, whose goal was to revolutionise energy production by making solar energy as the focus of energy production industry. He is also working on fast speed transportation concept that goes by the name ‘Hyperloop’.

Musk is on his way to achieving everything he had on that to-do list back when he was just 16 years old. He wants to alter the way we travel, the energy we consume, and our legacy as earthbound human beings. Nowadays, he talks about nuclear fusion and colonising Mars and aeroplanes that take off vertically. He is only 45, and the speed at which he is going, it’s not delusional anymore to say everything he claims he’s going to do, he will eventually do it.

If there is one man who can make that scene from your favourite science fiction movie come true, it’s Elon Musk, a visionary, a wizard.
